Pond Bead Filter research

Research of biological bead-filtering systems for ponds determined that the Advantage Bead filter has the best design, right features and best performance. Even the best guarantee. Best design
Right features
Best performance
Best guarantee

Pros: This filter is clean and simple to operate, it has features that some of the others charge extra for. The included blower is twice as powerful then the competitions. Other filtering systems require draining sludge buildup during the cleaning process. This extra step is not a part of the "Advantage bead filter" cleaning process since there is no build up. Better engineering has over come this.

Cons: After using an Advantage 10 & 15 model bead filters on two different ponds over the last couple of years, we are still trying to find one.

Skimmer review

Research into skimmers was limited to finding one that handles high flow and can be installed into EPDM rubber liners since most home pond builders prefer liner ponds. The OASE BIOsys OP-300 was selected for its great design, right features and excellent performance.

Great design
Right features
Excellent performance
3 year warranty

OASE BIOsys - OP 300 Skimmer

Pros: This Skimmer is simple to install and easy to clean. It features a large basket and high water flow design. Even when the basket was full of leaves, the flow still managed to continue to provide for the pump. The sturdy rock design lid looks natural and permits painting to match surrounding rock if needed. The extra space in the rear has room to install a second bulkhead for connecting additional plumbing if needed. (Extra Hole and bulkhead not included) The sturdy basket is simple to remove and replace as compared to other skimmers which use netting.

Cons: The basket handles could be larger or taller so that they would extend out of the water. This would benefit users when removing the basket during times of colder more frigid water temperatures. The basket filters debris to 3/8". Filtering down to 1/4" would be even better. However, this may impact flow and may not be an option.

Overall, this is an excellent skimmer and enough good things can't be said about it.

Pump review

Research into pumps was limited to the following considerations. Most practical and economic to operate. Finding one that handles good flow and operates at low amps is important to most pond owners since pumps operate 24 hrs a day and 7 days a week. The Aqua-flo pumps were selected for this exact reason. Selected for there low operating cost, right price and excellent performance.

Low operating costs
Right price
Excellent performance
3 year warranty

             FLO-MASTER XP/XP2

Pros: Whisper quiet external pumps that operate at low amps. The Aqua-flo pumps compared to most pumps, operates at very low amps. The 1/4 hp draws only 2.5 amps and pushes nearly 5400 gallons per hour. This is rated at about 8 feet of head pressure. The 1/4 HP pumps and larger have 2 inch inlets and outlet connections. The pump prices are affordable. Electrical costs of operating the 1/4 hp. pump in our area is just $15.00 a month running it 24/7 (or $188 per year). See Chart to determine your costs.

Cons: The basket costs extra if needed. Not self priming.

Overall, this is an excellent pond pump and cheap to operate. The Aqua-flo should be considered before other pumps. They also make a great addition to creating dynamic waterfalls if you are looking to add more flow to an existing system.
